उस भीड़ में मैं अकेला, और गिनतियां हज़ारों की संख्या को छू रही थीं, एक बात बार-बार मेरे मन में एक प्रश्न बनकर उमड़ रही थी, कि ये सही हैं या मैं गलत हूँ? मेरी रवानगी अब मंजिल से कहीं दूर होती दिख रही थी, तभी किसी ने पीछे से मेरे कंधे पर हाथ रखकर कहा — तुम कभी गलत नहीं हो सकते और अकेले भी... वो मेरे पापा थें... उस रात भी तो, जब जिन्दगी को अंतिम पड़ाव मानकर मैं बैठ गया और इसी अंधेरे को मैंने अपना अंतिम सफर मान लिया, तो चैन की सांसों ने मुझसे कहा कि — अभी एक और सुबह बाकी है... और.. मैं अकेला नहीं हूँ... चैन की वो सांसें भी मेरे पापा ही थें... उन रेगिस्तानी दुपहरी में भी, जब एक कदम भी चलना मुश्किल था, पैरों के छाले आंखों को अंधे कर रहे थें और जिस्म पत्तों सा सूख चुका था, तब उम्मीद की एक बूंद ने मुझसे कहा — कि अभी तो तुम्हें समंदर पीना है... शायद... वो उम्मीद भी मेरे पापा ही थें... और.... यूं ही मेरे पापा हैं।
