“Success can wait, but the people waiting for you at home cannot.”

The rain had just stopped in Mumbai. The streets glistened with the reflection of yellow streetlights, and the smell of wet earth floated in the air. Ishaan sat in his glass-walled office on the 27th floor, overlooking the city that never seemed to sleep. His phone kept buzzing with meeting reminders, but his mind was elsewhere — or maybe nowhere at all. It had been years since he had gone back home. Years since he had walked those narrow lanes where he once ran barefoot as a boy, where his mother used to stand at the doorway with a smile. Mumbai had swallowed him whole. He came here chasing dreams, and those dreams had turned into deadlines, profits, and endless board meetings. Just then, the office door opened. “Ishaan!” a familiar voice called. He turned, startled. Standing there, dripping from the rain, was Shashi — his childhood friend. Her eyes still had that same warmth, but tonight, there was something heavier in them. “Shashi? What are you doing here?” he asked, genuinely surprised. “I came because I couldn’t wait any longer,” she said, walking in. “Do you even remember the last time you went home?” He tried to smile. “It’s been… some years. I’ve been busy. You know how it is—” “No, Ishaan,” she cut him off. “I know exactly how it is. Your mother’s health is failing. She’s… not the same anymore. And you’re here, in this palace of glass, as if nothing else exists.” Her words hit him, but before he could respond, she sat down across from him. “I’ll tell you something. And I want you to listen.” Ishaan leaned back, crossing his arms. “Alright. I’m listening.” Shashi’s voice softened. “Once, there was a little bird. She had never seen the sky beyond her cage. Every day, she would sit inside and look at the top of a tall tree. She dreamed of building her nest there one day, high above, where she could see the whole world. In her imagination, she already had children — little chicks who would spread their wings and one day fly to the moon. She would watch them from the nest, proud and happy, knowing they were free.” Ishaan was silent, watching her as she spoke.

“One day,” Shashi continued, “the cage door was left open. The bird’s heart raced. She hopped out, spreading her wings to fly… but she couldn’t. She had tried so hard, for so long, to escape, that her wings had grown weak. She couldn’t reach the top of the tree she had always dreamed of. Still, she smiled at her little chick and said, ‘Go. Fly for me. Build the nest of our dreams. Touch the moon for me.’ And she watched her child soar — to the top of the tree, then higher, and higher still. The bird stayed below, her own wings useless, but her heart full of happiness. She waited. She waited for the day her child would bring the moon to her, just as she had always imagined.” Shashi paused, her eyes locking with Ishaan’s. “Do you know, Ishaan? That bird… she’s still waiting. Every day, she looks at the sky, hoping to see her child return with the moon.” Ishaan’s throat tightened. “And you’re saying my mother is… that bird?” Shashi nodded slowly. “Yes. After you left, her health began to fade. She still tries to smile, but her eyes… they’re always on the road outside your home, as if any moment, you’ll appear. Every morning, she sits there. Every evening, she’s still there. Her hope is the only thing keeping her alive.” Her voice cracked. “It feels like the length of her breath is tied to the hope of seeing you. Maybe her last heartbeat is waiting for your touch. She just wants to see you once, with her own eyes, before…” Shashi didn’t finish. The room was silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioner. Ishaan turned away, staring at the rain-blurred city lights. Memories he had buried under years of work came flooding back — his mother humming while making tea, calling him in for dinner, tucking him in when he was sick. “Shashi… I didn’t know it was this bad,” he whispered.

“You didn’t know because you never called,” she replied softly. “Because every time she tried to talk, you said you were in a meeting. Because you thought there would always be time.” Ishaan closed his eyes. The weight of guilt pressed heavy on his chest. “I thought… I was doing this for her. To give her a better life.” Shashi shook her head. “You forgot that for her, a better life was never about money. It was about you. Your presence. Your smile.” There was a long pause before Ishaan spoke again. “I’ll go home.” Shashi’s eyes welled up, but she smiled. “Then go now. Don’t wait for the next flight. You don’t know how much time you have left with her.” Ishaan stood, reaching for his coat. He looked around his grand office — the polished table, the awards, the endless skyline — and for the first time, it all felt… meaningless. As he and Shashi walked out into the rain, he whispered, almost to himself, “I hope it’s not too late.” Somewhere far away, in a small house, an old woman sat by the window, looking at the road. The rain had stopped there too. She thought she saw a figure in the distance, and her heart skipped a beat. Maybe… just maybe… her little bird was finally coming home.

"Incompleteness At Every Turn" is a book about life’s unfinished stories, deep feelings, and the beauty of being imperfect. Written in a simple yet touching way, the author shows that it is okay to feel incomplete. In fact, our incomplete parts are what help us grow, learn, and keep moving forward every day.
